We all know that while achieving proficiency and mastery that farming is a money sink. We also know, that as a general rule, most of the produce we create doesn't sell well on the AH, and that it's not profitable to vendor it.
Today, I wanted to try and generate some cash for my farmer, so I decided to see how much I could make farming green onions and onion skins.
My strategy was simple - farm well-tended fields of onions, and do not process the poor plants at all (due to tool wear and time), vendor the onions and sell the skins at the AH.
Here's the results.
100 well-tended fields of green onions.
300x Soil of Rivendell = 72s 500x Green Onion seed = 20s 100x Fertilizer = 4s 100x Water = 4s
Material cost = 100s
I netted 213 poor plants, 481 fair plants, and 21 onion skins. I think these returns are typical.
I vendorered the poor plants without processing them, processed the fair plants and vendored the produce and then sold the onion skins at the AH.
Tool repair cost was 5s 24c, for a total cost of 105s 24c.
Proceeds:
2s 13c for the fair plants. 115s 44c for the 1924 Green Onions.
At this point, I'm already ahead a modest amount (117s 57c in proceeds vs. 105s 24c in costs), but not enough to justify the time spent.
On the server this farmer plays on, I get about 45s for an Onion Skin, so I figure I'll get about 945s for the skins.
Edited to add: In the future, I will not even bother processing the fair plants, except to fill personal and kinship need, the time involved is enormous and would be more profitable planting more fields.
